Another significant event for Walloon biodiversity: the Domain has reintroduced 2.500 green tree frogs!

29 July 2024

For the third year in a row, the Domain of the Caves of Han has taken part in the Walloon species preservation programme for the green tree frog, initiated by Natagora. For the past three deceades, this tiny frog had almost completely disappeared from this neck of the woods, as a result of the gradual destruction of its habitat. This is why their reintroduction is vital for the preservation of Belgian biodiversity!

This year, over 2.500 tadpoles form Dilsen-Stokkem and Hoogstraten were entrusted to the Domain so we could rear them. For several weeks, our animal carers took great care of them. Early July, a first batch of 1.000 green tree frogs was released. And last 24 July, 1.200 individuals were reintroduced into their natural habitat, near Arlon. Because the species has been reintroduced for the past two years, quite a few egg clutches have been spotted on these locations. Wonderful news for the species and a great source of pride for the Domain; we are delighted to see our actions have lead to such a great success!

On a larger scale, this reintroduction programme should encourage and reinforce initiatives aiming to protect the terrestial and aquatic mileux the green tree frog is particulary fond of. It is beneficial for a multitude of plants and animals that will develop and settle in these milieux. In fact, it leads to the reconstruction of an entire ecosystem!

The green tree frog: a teeny, tiny, yet extraordinary creature

The green tree frog is tiny yet it is also quite extraordinary! Adult frogs measure between 3 to 6 cm and have a smooth, gorgeous apple-green skin. Just like the chameleon, they are capable of changing colour to blend into their environment. And, just like the chameleon, it has the power of homochromy (or protective colouring). When stressed, it can transition from bright green to grey or even black. It is a bioindicator species, and is used in biomonitoring as it can provide important ecological information about the state, the functioning or even changes to an ecoystem. The green tree frog is quite picky when it comes to its living environment. It is very sensitive to pollution and changes in wetlands. Its presence is a reliable indicator of the health of the animal's environment.
