A moving moment at the Domain: our 5 young storks have taken flight!
7 August 2024
In May, the Domain of the Caves of Han was delighted to announce that 5 stork chicks (3 males and 2 females) had been born in the heart of the Wildlife Park. On Tuesday August 6, the 5 young storks were taken to the centre of the Park's vast plain, and took flight, heading towards new horizons. A moving and meaningful moment for the whole team!
After several weeks spent at their parents' side and after being ringed last June, the 5 young storks born on the Domain of Caves of Han reached the age of emancipation. On Tuesday, August 6, an important milestone awaited them: their flight to freedom.
The animal caretakers Valérian and François, who had been watching them since birth, were delighted to set them free and watch them soar over the Domain. The date of their release was definitely not chosen at random. At the moment, several gatherings of white storks have been spotted in the area. They are preparing to embark on their migration to southern Spain and North Africa. The Domain of the Caves of Han hopes that the 5 young storks will join flocks heading for warmer climes and enjoy many great adventures.
It's only goodbye for now...
For white storks, it is usual for the male to return to their birthplace after migration. The Domain takes part in a breeding programme for white storks, in collaboration with the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences (IRSNB), in order to increase the naturally occurring population in the Famenne. It would be a great achievement for the Domain to welcome them back to the area next spring!
